BIOGRAPHICAL DATA

Version date 2021-09-22

I was born in Stockholm on the 9th of October, 1938. Studied philosophy, mathematics and physics at Stockholm University.

In 1968 I took my doctor's degree at Stockholm University in elementary particle physics.

After that I devoted myself to light and colour, not only from a physical but also from a perceptual, phenomenological, aesthetical as well as a philosohical point of view. Of course, in that connection I run into Goethe's Theory of Colour and his criticism against the Newtonian theory of colour. I edited and commented a Swedish edition of his "Entwurf einer Farbenlehre" (1976) and after that I have been extensively lecturing on colour -- much inspired by Goethe's view -- as well as written a number of articles and books on colour theory (in Swedish).

My research work, starting with computational theories for colour vision, as in the report "Colour and Physics" (1973), has since mainly dealt with the assessment of colour rendering properties of artificial light sources, in collaboration with groups at Fysisk institutt in Oslo and at the School of Architecture, KTH, Stockholm; where I was associate professor in 1981/82.

During the years 1983-92 I was associated with the Swedish Committee for Future Oriented Research (SALFO), taking parts in organizing international conferences, such as:
"An Inventory of Present Thinking about Parts & Wholes" (1983)
"Structure and Evolution of Systems" (1984)

During the years 1983-90 I made a study of the use of symbolic notation systems within various disciplines -- mathematics, physics, chemistry, technology, cartography, music, dance, architecture. It was published (in Swedish) with the title "Tecken att tänka med" (1991)

I have since long been fascinated by Martin Buber's philosophy of dialogue, so meanwhile I have put my efforts into translating a selection of his writings into Swedish.

A similar, quite demanding work, for me as physicist, was the translation into Swedish of Hans-Georg Gadamer's "Aktualität des Schönen -- Kunst als Spiel, Symbol und Fest". It gave me new perspectives on human culture.
